MASSIVE ATTACK - MEZZANINE

Massive Attack's Mezzanine dropped in 1998, signalling a darker, moodier shift for the Bristol-based pioneers of trip-hop. As their third album, it diverged from the lush, jazzy textures of their earlier work, embracing murky, atmospheric soundscapes built around brooding basslines and fragmented beats. Produced by the band itself—Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles—the album also features haunting vocal performances from frequent collaborator Horace Andy and Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser, whose ethereal presence on tracks like “Teardrop” became iconic. The album was both a commercial and critical success, often seen as their magnum opus, and it went on to win the Q Award for Best Album. Its blend of paranoia, sensuality, and dissonance resonated far beyond the trip-hop genre, influencing artists across electronic and rock music. With Mezzanine, Massive Attack didn’t just expand their sonic palette—they cemented their place as one of the most forward-thinking acts of the '90s. Upon release, it went to the #1 spot in the British, Australian, Irish and New Zealand album charts.
