Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ehad replaced all of the group apart from guitarist\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMarc Riley\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewith new members, bringing the band ever closer to the first of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Fall’s\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edefinitive lineups.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew bass player\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSteve Hanley\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand guitarist\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCraig Scanlon\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewould remain at the band’s core for at least the next decade, though drummer\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMike Leigh\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewould only last a year or so, being replaced by his predecessor\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKarl Burns,\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewho would return regularly over the next few albums. The real change though was in\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSmith\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ehimself, whose work as a writer would begin to mirror the confidence that had always been evident in his unique vocal delivery.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe songs on\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLive at the Witch Trials\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ehad featured a distinctive but familiar landscape of post-industrial urban decay, bad drugs and street violence, but 1979's\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDragnet\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewas the first\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFall\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ealbum to feature narratives that stepped away, not just from typical post-punk tropes, but traditional ideas of how rock songs worked altogether.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs such it was hailed at the time as being both ugly and impenetrable – a difficult album which, along with\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSmith’s\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eoften combative demeanor, would see\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ethe Fall\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003elabelled as a difficult band.
