If you've ever tuned into the producer's NTS show, you'll know his taste stretches fully across the musical map - you're as likely to hear Andy Stott or Actress as you are MIKE or Babyxsosa. Even so, 'The Geometry of Murder...' was unexpected. The album apparently came about thanks to the artists' "mutual respect and appreciation for one another," but it still plays like one of those weird anomalies. We suppose Earth have prior form here - their 2005 remix album 'Legacy of Dissolution' heralded their second wind, with versions of catalog classics from Mogwai, Jim O'Rourke, Justin Broadrick?

That record's best mix, Autechre's take on 'Coda Maestoso In F(Flat) Minor' seemed to do very little to the original material, treating its stems with care to bring out the key textures and accent the percussive slaps. Black Noi$e takes a similar approach, darkening Dylan Carlson's pioneering debut even further, creating additional sludge wherever necessary. Tape echoes are stacked to fashion eerie vortexes and drums tweaked and shot out, hard panned and pitched until they're bleak shadows of their decaying forms. A slimier, more dissociated version of a doom metal milestone might sound like a quirky concept, but 'The Geometry of Murder...' hits really fucking hard.

Tracks for Earth x Black Noi$e - Geometry of Murder: Extra Capsular Extraction Inversions:

1.
