big-star-1-recordblue-coloured-vinyl
BIG STAR - #1 RECORD(BLUE COLOURED VINYL)

Big Star's #1 Record arrived in 1972 as the band's debut and has since outgrown its original commercial disappointment to become one of the key reference points for power pop and later indie rock. Built around the songwriting partnership of Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, it takes bright melodic craft associated with mid-period Beatles records, mixes it with ringing guitars and a tougher rock pulse, and lands in a style that many later bands would draw from. Its reputation has only grown, with the album later appearing in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

What still makes #1 Record so easy to love is the range inside that concise first statement. Songs like “Feel” and “When My Baby's Beside Me” hit with sharp hooks and a fresh, guitar-led energy, while “The Ballad of El Goodo” and “Thirteen” show the gentler side of the band: harmonies, acoustic detail, and a real feel for teenage longing without overplaying it. That balance helps explain why musicians from R.E.M. and the Replacements to Teenage Fanclub, Wilco, Beck, Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley have all been linked to Big Star's long afterlife.

For collectors, this edition also highlights how the album keeps circulating across generations. The 2024 Blue Jay pressing brings Big Star's debut back on blue vinyl, and the limited presentation suits a record whose cult reputation has steadily overtaken the circumstances of its first release.

Features

Blue Vinyl, Limited Edition

Reviews

These are sturdy songs, feelingly performed, and once you get beyond the style to the content, you'll still be impressed. - AllMusic.com

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0759/3947/9852/files/345585fc906bee2877b167d0397cb77790096524.jxl?v=1794037584
